The ship runs aground on a reef, and the family learns the ship's crew has taken to a lifeboat and abandoned them. Subsequent searches for the crew yield no trace. The ship survives the night as the storm abates, and the family finds themselves within sight of a tropical island. The ship's cargo of livestock, dogs, guns & powder, carpentry tools, books, a disassembled pinnace, and provisions have survived. The family builds a raft, lashes livestock and the most valuable supplies to it, and paddles to the island, where they set up a temporary shelter. "We prepared for our rest; we loaded all our arms, then offered up our prayers together, thanking God for his signal mercy to us, and commending ourselves to his care." When a Swiss pastor and his family are shipwrecked on a tropical island they look to their faith in God to help them triumph over adversity. Faced with surviving in an unknown environment, the family uses supplies from the abandoned ship and their own skills in farming to build a rewarding new life--all while striving to be faithful to their Christian ideals. First published in 1812, The Swiss Family Robinson was inspired by Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, and was intended to instruct author Johann David Wyss's sons about the Christian faith, family values, and self-reliance. "Or Adventures on a Desert Island." According to Wikipedia: "The Swiss Family Robinson (German: Der Schweizerische Robinson) is a novel by Johann David Wyss, first published in 1812, about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia... Johann David Wyss (March 4, 1743 - January 11, 1818) is best remembered for his book The Swiss Family Robinson. It is said that he was inspired by Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, but wanted to write a story from which his own children would learn, as the father in the story taught important lessons to his children. The Swiss Family Robinson was first published in 1812 and translated into English two years later. It has since become one of the most popular books of all time."
