Darwin's theory of natural selection evolved while he was aboard the H.­M.­S. Beagle (1831–1836) observing species in South America. His data led Darwin to contemplate the mystery of the origin of species.
Importantly, Darwin found that species were not created independently, but rather descended from one another. He also previewed the concept of natural selection, which states that beings with advantageous variations will be “naturally selected” over others and have the best chance of survival.
