A Tale of Two Cities A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, is a popular historical novel set in both London and Paris during the French Revolution. It begins in 1775, when Jarvis Lorry, an employee of Tellson’s Bank, is heading to France from England to retrieve Dr. Alexandre Manette, a prisoner in Bastille. Along the way, Lorry runs into Lucie Manette, Dr. Manette’s daughter, and informs her that her father wasn’t killed but is imprisoned. They travel together from then on, and end up running into the Defarges, who know about Dr. Manette but are also secret French Revolutionaries. When they finally get to his jail cell, they find that Dr. Manette is insane, to the point where he almost doesn’t recognize his own daughter. The story of the crazy Dr. Manette, his daughter, and the Defarges during the French Revolution unfolds in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities.
